Audi takes the guesswork out of traffic lights with the debut of new technology

New Traffic Light Information (TLI) technology will give Audi drivers data on red lights.

Most drivers have experienced the frustration of having to slam on your car breaks as a green light turns red at the last moment. With the introduction of Audi’s new Traffic Light Information (TLI) technology, available on the new Audi A4, Q7, and A4 Allroad models, drivers will have a new sense of driving control.

When a driver approaches a connected traffic light – one that is in a city that shares its data with Audi – an icon will be displayed on the driver instrument cluster showing the current state of the stoplight and a prediction of when the light will change. The driver can then adjust their driving to account for the upcoming traffic light.

The system is only a prediction. Several variables can affect the stoplight, and drivers must always obey the light no matter what the TLI icon says.

“The launch of this technology is another in a long list of firsts for Audi that have positioned us as the industry leader in connectivity solutions,” said Audi of America President Scott Keogh. “V2I applications and services like Traffic Light Information are essential components as we continue to move toward an independent future. We applaud the innovative approach of Las Vegas in working with us on V2I as well as on our various piloted driving demonstrations over the past years.”

The Traffic Light Information launched in December 2016 in Las Vegas, Nevada on the select Audi models. It will continue to roll out to cities across the United States as new municipalities are connected to the Audi infrastructure.
