Changes to UK Driving License Regulations

Beginning June 8th, 2015 the UK Government’s Driving and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) introduced a change that may affect Expats in the United Kingdom. The DVLA stopped issuing paper counterparts to the photocard driving license, and existing paper counterparts are no longer valid.

Please note, UK paper-only driving licenses remain valid and should not be destroyed.

HOW IT AFFECTS YOU

Expats with a UK drivers license who rent a car in the United Kingdom will need to obtain an access code from the DVLA ‘Share Driving License’ website. The code needs to be given to the rental car company in addition to the last eight digits of the employee’s driving license. This access code is valid for 72 hours and will allow the rental car company to review the Expats driving history.
