Geography:“Literally covered from north to south by the Rocky Mountains, Idaho contains dozens and dozens of individual mountain ranges. The most significant include the Bitterroots which stretch along much of its border with Montana, and the Caribou, Clearwater, Owyhee, Salmon River, Sawtooths and Seven Devils ranges.The Continental Divide (an imaginary line) indicates the absolute highest points of land, where on either side of same rivers will flow downhill, east or west. That divide runs from northwestern Canada, south along the crests of the Bitterroot Range of the Rocky Mountains in Idaho, then south all the way into Mexico, where it follows the peaks of the Sierra Madre Occidental.

The Snake River Plain is a wide and flat lava-based, bow-shaped depression that runs through south-central Idaho. This fertile plain is home to the state’s agricultural industries. Hell’s Canyon, dissected by the Snake River on Idaho’s border with Oregon, is the deepest gorge in America, with a maximum depth of 7,900 ft. Shoshone Falls located along the Snake River near Twin Falls stands 212 ft. High, which is higher than Niagara Falls. The moon-like, almost weird-looking Craters of the Moon National Monument, is in essence, a sea of young lava flows, complete with scattered islands of cinder cones and sagebrush.Idaho’s most significant river is the Snake; it rises in the Grand Tetons of Wyoming and flows all the way to the Columbia River in Washington State.Other rivers of note include the Bear, Bruneau, Kootenai, and Salmon. Geography: “From the Lake Michigan shoreline, inland for 8-10 miles, From the Chicago suburbs, moving west toward the Iowa border, the land gradually rises into a hilly area in the far-northwest. The state’s highest point, Charles Mound, at 1,235 ft., is located there. The southern two-thirds of the state is rolling farmland, commonly called America’s Corn Belt. This wide and fertile swath of land (hilly is some areas) stretches into the states of Iowa, Indiana, and Missouri.

The Shawnee Hills region (a narrow strip of land) extends across the southern part of Illinois from Elizabethtown to the Missouri border. About 40 miles wide and 70 miles long, this hilly woodland rises to nearly 1,000 feet. The state’s most important river – the Mississippi – forms it’s entire western border. Other rivers of note include the Illinois, Kaskaskia, Ohio, and Wabash. Geography:“The Cumberland (or Appalachian) Plateau dominates the eastern third of Kentucky. It’s a heavily forested area of hills and mountains and contains the state’s highest point, Black Mt., at 4,139 ft. The Bluegrass Region (north-central) is a series of rolling hills and meadows. It gets its colorful name from bluegrass, the common name for lawn and pasture grass in parts of the eastern United States.
Northwestern Kentucky is hilly land bordered by the Ohio River. It’s often referred to as the Western Coal Field because of the large coal deposits in the area.

The southwestern corner of the state includes the swampy lowlands of the Mississippi River flood plain and the lowest elevations in the state. This area, purchased from the Chickasaw Indians in 1818, is called the Jackson Purchase and named for Andrew Jackson. The Mammoth Cave area (central), is the world’s longest cave system, with 365 miles explored to date.
The”Land Between the Lakes” recreational area, bordered by Lake Barkley and Kentucky Lake, is a hilly, forested area of some 170,000 acres. The state’s waterways are dominated by the massive Ohio River, forming its entire northern border, and by the Cumberland and Tennessee River systems, and their many spin-off lakes. Geography:”Sea level salt marsh stretches along much of Louisiana’s constantly-changing Gulf of Mexico coastline, and inland for up to 25 miles in some spots. From there the land gently rises into a wide coastal plain (or prairies) with a few rolling hills to the east and west. From central Louisiana to its northern border with Arkansas, the landscape of Louisiana elevates very slowly to its highest point (Driskill Mountain) standing at a mere 535 feet above sea level.

The Mississippi River Delta is covered by silt deposited by the Mississippi River as it slows down and enters the Gulf of Mexico. This process continually and slowly extends Louisiana’s land further into the Gulf. Subsequently, the salt marshes created provide a fertile breeding area for crab, fish, and shrimp. In addition to the massive Mississippi River system, other rivers of note include the Atchafalaya, Ouachita, Pearl, Red, and Sabine. They were named by the Maine Legislature (in 1959) for Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, poet, and native son. Mt. Katahdin, located within the boundaries of Baxter State Park, is the state’s highest point at 5,267 ft. North central, deep water lakes, remnants of the last Ice Age, cover the land. They mix with the seemingly endless pine forests, as Maine is 90% forested, and remains one of the world’s leading producers of paper. The jagged and rockbound Atlantic Ocean coastline is a mixture of the bay, inlets, sandy beaches and thousands of odd-shaped islands. Geography:“The eastern half of Maryland is dominated by the Chesapeake Bay, and the surrounding estuaries and coastal plain. Numerous coves, creeks, salt marshes and small islands seem everywhere. The Delmarva Peninsula occupies portions of three U.S. states: Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia. The peninsula is about 180 long, and nearly 71 miles wide. It’s bordered by the Chesapeake Bay on the west, and the Delaware River, Delaware Bay, and the Atlantic Ocean on the east. The peninsula’s land is a mostly flat with a few low-lying hills. Sandy beach fronts the Atlantic Ocean coastline along the edges of Assateague National Seashore

To the northwest of Annapolis, the fertile land rises into the hills of the Piedmont Plateau, then on into the northern reaches of the Blue Ridge Mountains. In the panhandle area of the west, the Allegheny Mountains, a significant range of the Appalachian Mountains cross the state, continuing into Pennsylvania. This heavily forested area is crisscrossed by deep river valleys. Maryland’s highest point is located there; Backbone Mountain at 3,360 ft. The most significant river is the Potomac, as it forms the entire southern border of the state. To the northeast, the Susquehanna River drains into the Chesapeake Bay, and Central, the Patuxent River empties into the southern reaches of the Bay. The (mostly manmade) Chesapeake & Delaware Canal runs 14 miles long, 450 feet wide and 35 feet deep across Maryland and Delaware, connecting the Delaware River with the Chesapeake Bay.
