Yankee Doodle Dandy: Celebrating the 4th of July in the US

Celebrating the 4th of July

Independence Day—also known as the 4th of July, is a big celebration and federal holiday woven into the history of the United States.

The tradition and accompanying celebrations go all the way back to the American Revolution. On July 2nd, 1776, the Continental Congress voted in favor of independence, and two days later delegates from America’s 13 colonies adopted the Declaration of Independence, a historic document drafted by Thomas Jefferson.

From 1776 to the present day, July 4th has been celebrated as the birth of American independence, with festivities ranging from fireworks, parades, and concerts to more casual family gatherings and barbecues. So, if you’re gearing up to relocate to the US, it‘s worth learning the traditions.

Declaration of Independence

The Declaration of Independence

The Declaration of Independence was written by Thomas Jefferson and ultimately signed by representatives of the first US colonies on July 4, 1776, or Independence Day.

This incredibly important document represented the severing of ties between the 13 colonies and the rule of Great Britain. The colonies were now independent from King George III’s monarchy and became the country that would evolve into the United States of America.

The Declaration of Independence defined the political and moral philosophy for the US and was the backbone of the first modern democracy. Some of the most famous demands included in the document were all men are created equal, all humans have the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, and government should be elected by the people.

4th Of July Celebrations

Parades and family barbecues

Celebrations for “America’s Birthday” on the 4th of July started in the city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1777 with decorations of the US national flag colors, red, white, and blue. Parades filled the streets, there were large fireworks displays, and 13 cannon shots were fired in honor of the 13 colonies. The 4th of July celebrations became an American tradition in the years that followed and was officially named a federal holiday in 1870.

4th of July Fireworks

Fireworks lighting up the sky

Ever wonder why fireworks became synonymous with the Fourth? The answer is simple. Before the signing of the Declaration, one of its signee’s, John Adams, wrote a letter to his wife saying that the colonies should mark the occasion with a huge firework show that could be seen “from one end of this continent to the other from this time forward forevermore.”

For centuries, Americans have been keeping this tradition alive with showstopping firework displays across the country in cities and backyards. The American Pyrotechnic Association even said that over 14,000 fireworks light up the sky each year on the day.
