Celebrations for “America’s Birthday” on the 4th of July started in the city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1777 with decorations of the US national flag colors, red, white, and blue. Parades filled the streets, there were large fireworks displays, and 13 cannon shots were fired in honor of the 13 colonies. The 4th of July celebrations became an American tradition in the years that followed and was officially named a federal holiday in 1870.
